Okay, ready, reflect! Today was a good day. I learned a lot today. I made my first youtube video. I posted myself, in a video, online. Something I don’t EVER do.
I had my reservations about this course. When I inquired about openings in the course, I never expected to get a reply, and I had no idea what it was about. I knew it was digital storytelling, and that sounded interesting. I read the daunting course description, and I was intimidated, but I couldn’t say no. Will I regret it next week? Maybe, but I don’t think so. I’ve needed a creative outlet for a while, and this could be it.
Setting up the blog didn’t scare me, and signing up for the Flickr, Twitter, and Soundcloud accounts didn’t either. Making the video was tough. I don’t like being on camera, but I need to get used to speaking in front of an audience, and videos seem like a good way to ease into it.
Western movies that come to mind when I think back on my youth: City Slickers, Wild Wild West, Back to the Future part III. Yes, most of my western genre movie memories include comedies. I am a product of the 90’s, I suppose.
I also loved Last of the Mohicans, and Dances with Wolves (Is that a western? I think it could be considered.) Tatonka.
And of course, the song, Desperado, by the Eagles. What could be better than that?
The goal of this post is to summarize Week 1 (which for me has actually consisted of just today). I just joined the class today, and as such, am an in a bit of a time crunch to get the week 1 deliverables together.
A little about me:
I am a Non-traditional student at UMW. The non-traditional part being that I am 34 years old, I am married, and we have a son in fifth grade. I earned an Associates degree in Business Administration from Germanna, after which, I transferred to UMW. I am now a senior and a Computer Science major, but I won’t graduate until Spring 2017. I am trying to finish my degree and get my dream job so that my husband can stay home and eat bon bons all day for a while 🙂
I have been doing freelance web development work for a number of years, and because of this, I have a lot of experience with WordPress. Setting up today wasn’t too much of an issue, although I still have a lot of work to do to pretty up my blog page for this course. The hard part for me is going to be the blogging part. I was not blessed with the gift of gab (at least not before the first two beers). Anyways, this just looked like too much fun to pass up, so I’m ready!
The first thing that came to my mind when I thought of the western theme was Hi Ho Silver, Away! So, of course, that is the name of my blog, and my twitter account for this course. Not terribly original, but kind of fun and dorky, which I think suits me pretty well.
On to the social media…
Introductory Twitter post:
Hi all! This is my Introduction post to ds106. Let’s explore the Western Digital Frontier! #ds106
I have never used Soundcloud before, but found it pretty easy to get set up with. I’m not sure what I would use this for in the future, however, so I am interested in learning some ways in which others use the platform.
I am also not well-versed in video production or publicly uploaded youTube videos of myself, so here is my first embarrassing attempt at a video introduction. I’ll try to get a little more creative next time!
Also, I have mentioned my people-family, but a big part of my life also involves my animals. I have created a Flickr album to introduce them to you all:

Well, there’s my intro, Week 1, Day 1, all of the above. Up next for me is expanding my knowledge of the western genre beyond the words, “Hi Ho Silver, Away!”
Hi Everyone, I am here at last. The road is long and uphill both ways, but I am on my way! This is my official first blog post for ds106, coming to you from HiHoSilverAway.com, Blogging in the Western Digital Frontier!
